Listed Below, Are Just 8
Native-American Cultures That
Refers To This Spiritual
Concept:

1). Sioux/Lakota Peoples Belief/Antiquity:
Refers To The Great Spirit (or Great Mystery) As –
Wakan Tanka:
The Great Spirit, also called Wakan Tanka among the Sioux, the Creator or
the Great Maker in English, and Gitchi Manitou in Algonquian, is a conception of a supreme being prevalent among some Native
American and First Nations cultures. According to Lakota activist Russell Means a better translation of Wakan Tanka is the
Great Mystery.
In Native American mythology, Wakan Tanka (great mystery) is the supreme
being and creator of the Lakota Sioux. Sometimes called Great Spirit, he is similar to the supreme beings found in the myths
of many other North American peoples.
According to Lakota myth, before creation Wakan Tanka existed in a great
emptiness called Han (darkness). The Great Spirit or Great Mystery is generally
believed to be personal, close to the people, and immanent in the fabric of the material world. Lakota prayers refer to Him
as Grandfather; however, not all Nations assign gender, or only one gender, to the Great Mystery.

2). Hopi Peoples Belief/Antiquity:
Refers To The Great Spirit As:
The Great Spirit:
Chief Dan Evehema, a spiritual leader of the Hopi Nation, described the
Great Spirit as follows:
"To the
Hopi, the Great Spirit is all powerful.
He taught us how to live, to worship, where to go and what food to carry, gave us seeds to plant and harvest. He gave us a
set of sacred stone tablets into which he breathed all teachings in order to safeguard his land and life. In these stone tablets
were inscribed instructions, prophecies and warnings."

3). Blackfoot Peoples Belief/Antiquity:
Refers To The Great Spirit As:
OLD MAN:
"Old Man" is how the Great Mystery is "known" by the Blackfoot people.
Old Man personally created all things and personally instructed the Blackfoot people on how to attain spiritual wisdom in
daily life.

4). Cherokee Peoples Belief/Antiquity:
Refers To The Great Spirit As:
Unetlanvhi:
(Creator)
(also spelled Unelanvhi, Unetlvnvhi, Unelanahi, etc.) This is the Cherokee
word for God. Sometimes Cherokee people today also refer to the Creator as the "Great Spirit," a phrase which was borrowed
from other tribes of Oklahoma. Unetlanvhi is considered
to be a divine spirit with no human form or attributes and is not normally personified in Cherokee myths. The name is pronounced
similar to oo-net-la-nuh-hee. Sometimes another name such as Galvladi'ehi ("Heavenly One") or Ouga ("Ruler," also spelled
Ugv or Ugu) is used instead.

5). Cheyenne Peoples Belief/Antiquity:
Refers To The Great Spirit As:
Maheo:
(also spelled Maheo'o, Maheu, Maiyun, and other ways.) This is the Cheyenne
name for the Creator (God.) Literally his name means "Great One," and he is often referred to as Great Medicine or the Great
Spirit. Maheo is a divine spirit without human form or attributes and is rarely personified in Cheyenne folklore.
6). Lenape People Belief/Antiquity:
Refers To The Great Spirit As:
Ketanėtuwit:
(also spelled Kittanitowet, Ketanitowet, Kitanitowit, and several other
ways.) This means "Great Spirit" in the Lenape language, and is the Lenape name for the Creator god. He is sometimes also
referred to as Kishelėmukonkw (Kishelamąkänk, Kishelemukonk, Kishelamakank, Kishelamąkānk, Kitselemukong, Gicelemu'kaong,
Gicelemuhkaong, Kickerom, etc.), which literally means "Creator," or as Kanshė-Pąhtąmąwas (Kaunzhe Pah-tum-owans, Kanshe Pahtumawas,
etc.) which means "great god." Unlike most other Algonquian folklore, Lenape stories often personified the Great Spirit as
a human interacting with the Lenapes; other Lenape myths treated Ketanėtuwit
as a divine spirit with no human form or attributes. Ketanėtuwit is pronounced similar to keh-tah-nuh-tuh-wit, and Kishelėmukonkw
similar to keesh-shay-luh-mook-kawnk, with a slight whistle at the end.

7). Mohican Peoples Belief/Antiquity:
Refers To The Great Spirit As:
Waunthut Mennitoow:
(also spelled Wauntht Mennitow
and other ways): This means "Great Spirit" in the Mohican language, and is the most common name used for the Creator (God.)
Waunthut Mennitoow is a divine spirit with no human form or attributes (including gender) and is not personified in Stockbridge/Mohican
folklore.
8). Caddo Peoples Belief/Antiquity:
Refers To The Great Spirit As:
Caddi Ayo
(or Ayo-Caddi-Aymay.)
This means "Sky Chief" or "Chief Above" in the Caddo language, and is
the Caddo name for the Creator (God.) Sometimes the Plains Indian term "Great Spirit" is also used. Caddi Ayo is a divine
spirit and is not generally personified in Caddo folklore.
